Around the World for Sixpence

Waving goodbye to Burnie we set off for Strahan where we have at least 3 nights in a self-catering cabin.

See the brown sign in this photo (below)? Well we didn't follow it....... that's because I had already pulled over to take the photo before I saw the sign that said there was an information bay just up the road.

Anyway I took the photo, guessing that we would be crossing the mountains pretty soon. The mountain is Mount Murchison (1275m)

I found most of the areas we drove through today a little disappointing. Although we were skirting a wilderness area there was neither pretty nor awesome views. The areas we passed through were either mining or forestry areas and I found nothing remarkable about them.

We stopped at Rosebery for some morning tea and had planned to visit Montezuma Falls - I'm fairly confident that would have been spectacular, but we didn't make it. We took the turnoff but faltered. It wasn't the four-wheel-drive part that had us worried, it was the three hour round trip that we had to walk to get there that made us wimp out.

After that we continued on to Zeehan, where we stopped to visit their very comprehensive museum.

I was fascinated by the original purpose of the building that housed the museum........ I bought myself a souvenir while we were there. A sample of the mineral crocoite, which is purported to be Tasmania's mineral emblem. In spite of my years collecting crystals I have never seen or heard of it before but according to my research it energizes your whole system, stimulates creativity, and helps you to feel passionately about whatever has your attention.

I probably don't need any!!

Good things come to those who wait and about 20kms from Strahan there was a lookout that rewarded us with fantastic views.

There is a reason I titled this blog 'around the world for sixpence'.

Ray had been feeling slightly unwell so had left the museum in Zeehan to get some air whilst I was shopping.

As soon as we arrived at our accommodation in Strahan he laid on the bed for a rest.

When he woke up I told him I was going for a walk and he asked me to go to the bottle shop and reached into his pocket for his wallet...........

That was when all hell broke loose - Lost wallet - Panic Stations! The last place he had it was the museum at Zeehan....

We searched the pockets of his shorts

We searched his jacket

We searched my handbag

We searched the front of the car
We searched the back of the car

We searched the cabin

And then we searched them all again!

Then we really panicked!!

We rang the museum

We rang the police

We cancelled his ATM & Credit Card

Then we decided to drive the 45 minutes back to Zeehan and retrace our steps....

We went to the museum - no luck

We went back to the car to head for the police station and while I retraced our steps one more time Ray searched the car again..........................

You guessed it! Wallet found!!

All's well that ends well I guess.

So we went to the bottle shop on our way back and settled in for a drink and dinner.

After dinner we decided to have have that walk I missed earlier...

I just loved the different colours in this tree below.

The tourist park where we are staying is on the bay and the view across the water is almost all wilderness.

We came across this sign on our walk. The local school has taken part in a project to provide a habitat that will encourage kingfishers to return. All of the pictures in the poster below (except the central photo) are drawn and coloured by the children

This area is where they have planted trees and had a seat placed there presumably to observe the birds.

It was a lovely way to end the day! :-)
